What IPRally Agents are, and how to choose between the Novelty Search Agent and the Invalidity Search Agent

What are IPRally Agents?

IPRally Agents are autonomous AI workflows that carry out a complete patent search assignment end-to-end. Instead of formulating queries, running searches, and reviewing results manually, you describe the assignment, and the Agent handles the entire process — from defining the search target to analyzing every found document and drafting a report.

All Agents share the same working method:

  1. Define the search target as claims. Claims are the optimal format for IPRally’s AI search engine and define the technology to be searched exactly.

  2. Extract key features. Each claim is broken into the specific technical elements that will be checked against every document.

  3. Search. Multiple AI searches are run to cover the claims and their combinations.

  4. Review. Every found document is analyzed for the presence of each key feature, with reasoning and paragraph citations.

  5. Evaluate relevance. Documents are ranked into relevance tiers based on the feature analysis.

  6. Report. The findings are available as an interactive Feature Chart and as a Written Report.

Every Agent run creates a normal IPRally Project containing the searches, documents, feature chart, and report — so you can always take over manually where the Agent left off: analyze more documents, add your own documents to the same analysis, override relevance rankings, comment, and export.

Which Agent should I use?

  • Use the Novelty Search Agent when you start from an invention — an invention disclosure, a draft application, product specifications — and want to know whether it is new. The Agent’s first job is to carve a well-defined search target out of your materials.

  • Use the Invalidity Search Agent when you start from a granted patent (or published application) and want prior art against it. The claims are already fixed; the Agent’s job is to find and analyze documents published before the patent’s effective date that disclose the claimed features.

Access

Both Agents require that your organization has the Generative AI features enabled on an Unlimited plan (see Enabling AI Assistant Features), and that the respective Agent permission (Novelty Agent or Invalidity Agent) has been granted to your user account. Your organization must also have an active Agent subscription or trial, or your user account must have free Agent runs left; the free quota is replenished monthly.

Once enabled, switch the Home screen to Agent mode and pick the search type from the sidebar.
